How Does Botox® Work?

As you get older, fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable. This is true even if you stay out of the sun and take great care of your skin. It’s simply a part of aging that we have to accept. Fortunately, Botox® can resolve wrinkles without surgery. It’s specifically designed for dynamic wrinkles like forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and 11 lines between the eyebrows when you make facial expressions. Keep reading to learn how Botox® works.

What to Expect From Botox®

Since 2002 when it was approved by the FDA, Botox® has been a popular treatment. There have been 3.5 million Botox® injections performed in the U.S. each year.  It’s a brand name for a substance with botulinum toxin, which is a purified chemical that is derived from bacteria. It works by stopping muscular signals that weaken muscles and obstruct them from contracting and leading to wrinkles.   You can receive Botox® treatments on one area of your face or multiple areas in one session. Most sessions can be completed in 30 minutes and come with absolutely no downtime. You can return to work and your daily responsibilities immediately. Patients usually report that Botox® is painless and well worth it.

Botox® Results

In about four to eight days, you’ll enjoy noticeable results. Smoother skin and a younger looking complexion. Since Botox® results are temporary, you may need to return to our office for follow-up treatments that last for up to three months. Botox® can help you achieve your aesthetic goals without pain, surgery, or a great deal of downtime.

Good Candidates for Botox®

If you’re bothered by dynamic wrinkles, Botox® can be a great choice. It’s a great alternative to surgical treatments, as long as you’re in good health and have realistic expectations. While people associate Botox® with middle-aged and older men and women, it may be beneficial for younger patients.

If you’re in your 20s or early 30s, Botox® can delay the onset of dynamic wrinkles. We do not recommend Botox®, however, if you have a neuromuscular disease or are pregnant or breastfeeding. During a consultation, we can inform you of whether or not you’re a good candidate.
