How Do Botox, Dysport, Xeomin & Letybo Work?
All four are FDA-approved neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A, often called “tox” or “wrinkle relaxers.” Small, precise doses are injected into the specific facial muscles that crease your skin when you frown, squint or raise your brows.
The toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal that tells those muscles to contract. With the muscle relaxed, the skin above it smooths out and existing lines soften. The effect wears off gradually over about three to four months as the nerve forms new connections. Nothing about the treatment is permanent, and your provider can adjust your dose at each visit.
This is why neuromodulators work best on dynamic wrinkles, the lines caused by movement. Lines that are visible even when your face is at rest may also need a treatment that rebuilds volume or collagen, such as dermal fillers or microneedling.

Botox Cosmetic is the most recognized and most studied neuromodulator. It was the first approved for cosmetic use, in 2002, and is the only one FDA-approved for four areas: frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines, crow's feet, and the vertical neck bands that run from the jaw to the neck (platysma bands).
If you're new to tox or want to treat several areas, Botox is often where we start. Most patients see results within a few days, with the full effect at about two weeks.
Dysport®
Often works in 2–3 days- Generic name: abobotulinumtoxinA
- Made by: Galderma
- FDA-approved for: Frown lines
- Results start: Often 2–3 days
- Lasts: About 3–4 months
Dysport is FDA-approved for frown lines between the brows and is widely used on the forehead and around the eyes. Many patients notice results within two to three days, a little sooner than with some other options. Dysport tends to spread slightly more once injected, which can give a smooth, even result over larger areas like the forehead.
Dysport is dosed on its own scale, so treatment uses more Dysport units than Botox units for the same area. That doesn't mean you're getting more product or paying more. It's a different unit of measure. Dysport is not recommended for anyone with an allergy to cow's milk protein.
Xeomin®
"Naked" formula- Generic name: incobotulinumtoxinA
- Made by: Merz Aesthetics
- FDA-approved for: Frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet
- Results start: About 3–4 days
- Lasts: About 3–4 months
Xeomin is often called the "naked" neuromodulator because its manufacturing process removes the accessory proteins found in some other formulas, leaving only the active ingredient. Some patients and providers prefer this purified formula, especially patients who have had a weaker response to other products over time.

Letybo®
Newest option (2024)- Generic name: letibotulinumtoxinA
- Made by: Hugel
- FDA-approved for: Frown lines
- Results start: As early as day 2
- Lasts: About 3–4 months
Letybo is the newest neuromodulator available in the U.S. It was FDA-approved in February 2024 to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. In clinical trials, patients saw improvement as early as day two (on average, by day three), and results lasted about four months on average.
Letybo is another option for patients who want to try a newer formula, or whose provider thinks it's a good fit for their frown lines.

What Can Botox, Dysport, Xeomin & Letybo Treat?
Neuromodulators are most often used to treat the lines that form from repeated facial expressions. Our most requested treatment areas at The Refinery are:
- Forehead lines and frown lines. Horizontal lines across the forehead and the vertical “11 lines” between the brows are the most common reasons patients come in for wrinkle relaxers in Melbourne, FL.

Who Should Speak With a Provider First
Neuromodulators aren’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you have a neuromuscular condition (such as myasthenia gravis), an infection at the treatment site, or a known allergy to any botulinum toxin product, talk to your provider before treatment. How Long Does a Treatment Take?
About 15 minutes, so it fits easily into a lunch break. Your provider places a series of small injections with a very fine needle into the targeted muscles.
Does It Hurt?
Discomfort is usually minimal. Most patients describe each injection as a quick pinch. If you're sensitive, let your provider know. We can use ice or other comfort measures.
When Will I See Results?

Is There Any Downtime?
No downtime. You can go straight back to your day. Mild bruising or swelling may happen and usually fades within a few days. Skip alcohol, fish oil, vitamin E and NSAIDs for about a week beforehand (unless your doctor says otherwise), and stay upright for 4 hours afterward.

All four are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators that relax the muscles behind expression lines. They differ in formulation, how quickly they take effect, which areas they’re approved for and how they’re dosed. Botox has the most FDA-approved cosmetic areas. Dysport often starts working fastest. Xeomin has no accessory proteins. Letybo is the newest option. Your provider will recommend the best fit for you.
Neither is better overall. It depends on your treatment area, your goals and your provider’s recommendation. Dysport can start working a little sooner and spreads slightly more, which can suit larger areas. Botox is the most studied and is approved for more areas.
Both are botulinum toxin type A and work the same way. Xeomin’s manufacturing process removes the accessory proteins found in Botox, leaving a purified “naked” formula. Letybo is a different brand of botulinum toxin type A, made by Hugel. It was FDA-approved in 2024 for frown lines between the brows. It works the same way as Botox and gives similar results that last about three to four months.
For most patients, all four last about three to four months. How long results last depends more on your metabolism, muscle strength, dose and how regularly you’re treated than on the brand.
It depends on the area and the product. Treating frown lines alone takes far fewer units than treating the full upper face, and Dysport is measured in different units from Botox, Xeomin and Letybo.
